On Sunday last our seniors took on Abbeylara in the senior championship semi final in Pearse Park. The heavy earlier morning rain had gave way to dry and blustery conditions at throw in time. The opening stages were tight with both sides closing down the space of their opponents. The first white flag was raised when Abbeylara successfully converted a free. Dromard had a good spell of procession that resulted in scores from James Martin (2 points,1 free) and a point from play from Cian Mimnagh to move into a two point lead. Our opponents responded in decisive manner scoring a point from play and a free. Cian Mimnagh pointed from play which was cancelled out by an Abbeylara point from play to leave the halftime score Dromard 0-04 Abbeylara 0-04.The second half was a couple of minutes old when Padraig McNerney found the net with a goal. This was followed up by Cian Mimnagh and Francis McGee points from play. Abbeylara came back strongly scoring a goal and point from play. Dromard then found the net for the second time when Cian Mimnagh finished well after a through ball by Francis McGee. A pointed Francis McGee free and a Ross McNerney point from play followed. Abbeylara pulled two point back before Cian Mimnagh kicked a point. The Abbey men landed another point from play but it was Dromard who closed the scoring with Francis McGee and Cian Mimnagh frees following fouls on Ross McNerney and Francis McGee. There was a sense of relief among the Dromard players and supporters when final whistle sounded which saw the scoreboard read Dromard 2-11 Abbeylara 1-08. Team and scorers; Damien Sheridan, Paul McGee, Peter Masterson, David Pettit, Kevin Donohoe, John Sheridan, Padraig McNerney(1-00),Noel Reynolds, Bernard Sheridan, James Martin (0-02) 1 free, Ronan McEntire, Emmet Masterson (0-01), Ross McNerney (0-01), Francis McGee (0-03) 2 frees, Cian Mimnagh (1-04) 1 free. Great credit to our players who withstood a fiercely committed Abbeylara challenge to qualify for the county senior final against Longford Slashers on Sunday 6th October. Commiserations to this hard working and well drilled Abbeylara team who displayed a great competitive spirit but also played in a very sporting manner. A big thanks to our supporters who came out in big numbers and got behind the team in on big way. Congratulations to senior player Damien Sheridan who retained his All Ireland kick fada title on Saturday last at the Bray Emmets club in Co. Wicklow. This is Damien's third occasion to win this coveted title. His winning kick of 75 meters beat the existing record of 72 meters. He beat off a star studded field of competitors with Louth's Shane Connolly finishing second and Donegal's Paul Durcan finishing in third place. Congratulations and best wishes to former player and senior team trainer Sean Hagan on his appointment to the position of Team Manager of the Leitrim county senior team.
